Spotlight on Shwe Ngan - Myanmar
With notes of strawberry, watermelon, red vermouth, mango, caramel and a hint of smoke, this is great as a complex fruity filter or an intense, funky espresso.
Shwe Ywar Ngan was created by U Win Aung Kyaw, who has been roasting coffee since 1975. The ‘Godfather’ of the industry, U Win Aung Kyaw, has been influential in setting up Shan, a state within Myanmar, as a coffee-producing area.
In 1998, he bought land for a farm and began processing his coffee with the help of coffee experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) - a United Nations agency that works to end world hunger - and government microfinance loans to smallholder producers.
In 2001, the seeds were sown, which would one day make this the biggest coffee producing area in the country. In 2003, Shwe Ywar Ngan distributed 200,000 seedlings to farmers to assist this drive. The vast majority of these were red catuai because the FAO identified this variety as the most suitable for the region.
